Always Give Someone a Reason to Walk Up Those Stairs

In the bustling heart of Halifax, on the first floor of the building opposite the Midland Bank, a legacy that began in 1948 continues to thrive. My Grandad, Randolph Bottomley, started our company on Commercial Street, crafting a vision that went beyond mere business. He built a sanctuary of kindness, where every customer felt valued, and every interaction was an opportunity to brighten someone’s day.

Some of you might remember he used to give smarties to all the kids who had their eyes tested. I thought it was just me but I was pleasantly amused much later in life to hear your stories of the same treatment.

Randolph was known for going the extra mile. Those who walked through his doors didn’t just find quality products; they found a welcoming atmosphere where stories were shared, and laughter echoed. It was never just about transactions; it was about relationships, trust, and the promise of being treated as more than just a number.

My dad, John Bottomley took this up with his own take on it and always made sure people were looked after( and he’s still doing this on Tiree for the last 15 years)

He had that in mind with the change of premises!

Over 20 years ago, we made the move to

The Old Town Hall, but the ethos remains unchanged. In a world that often rushes past, we strive to be the reason someone decides to walk up those stairs—both in Halifax and Lindley.

There are fewer of them but we do still have stairs to the main door at the front. ( we have level access at the side door)

And in Lindley we’ve got 3 steps.

What does it mean to give someone a reason to ascend those steps? It means creating an environment where customers feel appreciated, where their needs and desires take centre stage. It’s about offering not just exceptional products but also a place filled with warmth and community spirit.

Imagine stepping through our doors and feeling an immediate sense of belonging. Perhaps it’s the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air, or the friendly faces who greet you with genuine smiles, always pleased to help.  Whatever it is, we want to ensure that every visit is memorable and we did our very best for you.

So, the next time you’re in the area, remember that those stairs lead to a place where you are not just a customer—you’re a Bottomley’s client, very much appreciated and we’re interested in you and how we can serve you.

Warm regards,

Jim
