This week I joined around 2,000 of the UK’s top independent business owners at the ICC in Birmingham for the Entrepreneurs’ Circle Annual Convention.
I travelled down with my good friend Garry Farr of Anthony James Hair in Halifax, and it was two days packed with learning, energy and connection.
The line-up of speakers was exceptional — each with something different to offer, and each leaving me with a lesson I’ll carry back into my own business at Bottomley Opticians.
Key Lessons from the Speakers
✨ Joe Wicks reminded us about energy and discipline. You can’t show up for your clients if you don’t first look after yourself. His simple, practical approach to health and consistency really hit home.
✨ Nigel Risner spoke about communication in a way that made us all rethink how we interact — with staff, with clients, with each other. The way you speak shapes the way you connect.
✨ Stefanie Sword-Williams, author of Fck Being Humble, challenged us on visibility. At first the shock title made me bristle — but the message wasn’t about losing humility in life, it was about not hiding when it comes to telling people how you can help them. Reviews and client stories are powerful, but in the end, it’s down to us to say what we do, confidently.
✨ John Vincent, co-founder of LEON, shared the reality of building a brand people love. His talk was packed with insights on keeping purpose and values at the heart of growth — something I want to bring back to Halifax and Lindley in how we serve our own clients.
✨ Marcus Sheridan, author of They Ask, You Answer, was a real highlight. His principle is simple but powerful: if your clients are asking questions, answer them — openly, honestly, and in detail. That’s how you build trust. His passion was infectious, and the fact that he was flying straight on to speak in Texas the next day shows the demand for his message worldwide.
And of course, Nigel Botterill and the EC team reminded us why being part of this network matters: independent business is thriving in the UK, and when we learn from each other, we all grow stronger.
Awards Night
The awards night, hosted by Vernon Kay, was another reminder of what’s possible.
Huge congratulations to Nick from our own EC local group, who took home a national award — a proud moment for Yorkshire business.
What I’m Bringing Home
I’ve been part of Entrepreneurs’ Circle for over five years now, and every time I attend the convention I come away inspired. But more importantly, I come home with practical lessons I can use straight away to better serve you — our clients in Halifax and Lindley.
For me, the takeaways this year are:
-
Keep energy and consistency at the core.
-
Communicate with clarity and care.
-
Be confident in saying what we do best.
-
Stay true to values while growing.
-
Never stop answering the questions clients are asking.
Independent business is alive and kicking. I’m proud that Bottomley Opticians is part of that story — and I’m excited to keep raising the bar for you.
